Norah Jones nació en Bedford-Stuyvesant, hija biológica del fallecido y famoso sitarista indio Ravi Shankar y de la productora de conciertos Sue Jones. Hermana por parte paterna de, la también sitarista, Anoushka Shankar.
Junto con su madre, vivió en Nueva York hasta que cumplió cuatro años. Entonces, se mudaron a Grapevine (cerca de Dallas, Texas), donde estuvo hasta los veinte. De esta época data su primer interés por la música, que se materializaba en la audición de discos de clásicos del blues y del jazz como Billie Holiday, Etta James, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Bill Evans, Joni Mitchell y otros. A estas influencias, hay que añadir las recibidas por vía de su abuela, aficionada al country de los outlaws, desde Hank Williams a Willie Nelson.
Norah empezó a estudiar canto y se sumó al coro de la iglesia para cantar gospel, al tiempo que iniciaba las clases de piano y saxofón (a los siete).
Cuando creció, se matriculó en una escuela de artes. Su primer contacto con el jazz lo tuvo en Dallas, al ingresar en su adolescencia en el Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. En 1996 y 1997 ganó varios premios de interpretación y composición para estudiantes. Al finalizar el instituto, entró en la Universidad de North Texas, donde estudió piano y teoría en el programa de jazz. Allí se especializó en teclado de jazz y formó su primer grupo. De ahí pasó a tocar el piano y cantar regularmente en un restaurante italiano.
Con veinte años cumplidos, Norah volvió a Nueva York para unas breves vacaciones y ya no quiso volver a Texas. Poco antes había tomado contacto con un grupo de músicos de aquella ciudad y, desde ese momento, se involucró en el circuito de clubes y conciertos de Greenwich Village, y colaboró con diversas bandas.
Durante dos años se ganó la vida cantando en salones de jazz, almuerzos y happy hours, muchas veces ante menos de quince personas y cobrando sólo de las propinas que les daban los parroquianos.
Abandonó la universidad, empezó a escribir sus propias canciones, formó parte del combo de funk fusion, Wax Poetic y, finalmente, montó su propio grupo con el bajista Lee Alexander, el guitarrista y compositor de «Don’t Know Why», Jesse Harris, y el baterista Dan Rieser. Por esa época, se estabilizó como cantante en el club nocturno The Living Room.

No Doubt
No Doubt fue una banda de rock formada en 1986, en Anaheim (California, Estados Unidos). Su música estuvo en sus inicios profundamente influida por el ska, evolucionando posteriormente más hacia el New wave. También fueron influidos por los estilos reggae jamaiquinos, llegando a actuar en múltiples ocasiones con artistas jamaiquinos como Lady Saw. Fue seis años después de su formación como banda, cuando lanzaron su álbum debut, No Doubt, que no tuvo el éxito esperado. Fue con su tercer álbum, Tragic Kingdom, de 1995, cuando alcanzaron la fama mundial, llegando a ser Disco de Diamante en los Estados Unidos.

Cuatro años después, la banda publicó Return of Saturn, que tuvo un éxito comercial menor y no pudo igualar el éxito de su antecesor. Solo un año y medio después, en 2001, la banda lanzó Rock Steady, álbum del que se desprenden éxitos como «Underneath It All» y «Hey Baby», con los que ganaron dos Premios Grammy.
En 2003 la banda lanzó un recopilatorio de grandes éxitos The Singles 1992-2003 junto con el sencillo «It’s My Life». Nirvana fue una banda de grunge estadounidense procedente de Aberdeen, Washington, Estados Unidos fundada por el vocalista y guitarrista Kurt Cobain y el bajista Krist Novoselic en 1987. Desde su formación, Nirvana pasó por una serie de frecuentes cambios de baterista hasta que en 1990 se unió, de manera definitiva, el baterista Dave Grohl. A finales de la década de 1980 Nirvana se estableció como parte de la escena musical de Seattle con su álbum debut Bleach, lanzado bajo el sello independiente de Seattle, Sub Pop, en 1989 el cual vendió 5 millones de copias a nivel mundial. La banda llegó a desarrollar un sonido que se basaba en los contrastes entre versos tranquilos y coros intensos. Un año más tarde, Nirvana firmó con la discográfica DGC Records y en 1991 lanzó su segundo álbum: Nevermind. El primer sencillo del álbum, «Smells Like Teen Spirit», escaló las listas musicales e inició la explosión de lo que hasta ese momento era conocido como rock alternativo en la escena musical mundial, en un movimiento al que los medios de la época se referirían como grunge. Además de Nirvana, otras bandas de la escena musical de Seattle como Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains y Soundgarden también ganaron popularidad; como resultado, el rock alternativo se convirtió en el género dominante en la radio y la televisión musical durante la primera mitad de la década de los 90.
El líder de la banda, Kurt Cobain fue denominado por los medios de comunicación como «la voz de una generación» y Nirvana como la «banda símbolo» de la Generación X. Cobain se sentía incómodo con la atención que se les brindaba y decidió enfocar la atención del público hacia la música de la banda, retando a la audiencia con su tercer álbum de estudio, In Utero. Nine Inch Nails
Nine Inch Nails (abreviado NIN y estilizado NI?) es una banda estadounidense de rock industrial fundada en 1988 por Trent Reznor en Cleveland, Ohio, Estados Unidos. Como su principal productor, cantante, compositor e instrumentista, Reznor es el único miembro oficial de Nine Inch Nails y el único responsable de la dirección de la banda. La música de Nine Inch Nails abarca un gran número de géneros musicales, aunque mantiene un sonido característico utilizando instrumentos electrónicos y procesamiento en el estudio de grabación. Después de grabar cada nuevo álbum de estudio, Reznor forma un grupo de músicos para las giras y conciertos. Suelen ser cambiantes y hacer arreglos en las canciones para ajustarlas a las actuaciones en directo. Los seguidores de la música underground acogieron muy bien a Nine Inch Nails en sus primeros años. Fechas en las que produjeron varios álbumes altamente influyentes que tuvieron gran acogida; muchas de las canciones de Nine Inch Nails se convirtieron en éxitos en los años 1990, dos de ellas ganaron Premios Grammy, y en total han vendido más de veinte millones de álbumes en el mundo, de los que diez y medio han sido solo en Estados Unidos. En 1997, Reznor apareció en la lista de la revista Time de la gente más influyente, y la revista Spin le describió como «el artista más importante de la música». En 2004, la revista Rolling Stone colocó a Nine Inch Nails en el puesto número 94 de su lista de los 100 artistas más grandes de todos los tiempos. Estilísticamente, la palabra que mejor caracteriza a Nina Simone es eclecticismo. Su voz, con rango propio de una contralto, se caracterizaba por su pasión, su breathiness (voz jadeante, sofocada, sin aliento) y su trémolo.
La influencia de Duke Ellington es patente en toda la obra de Nina, pero muy especialmente en cierto tipo de composiciones rebosantes de improvisación y de cercanía espiritual. Nina logra la complicidad del oyente con un empleo intencional de los silencios y minimizando el acompañamiento. Cuando cantaba, efectuaba en ocasiones llamativas transiciones entre el susurro, el grito y el lamento, para intentar subrayar los estados de ánimo enunciados en las canciones.
Gran luchadora por los derechos civiles de las personas de ascendencia africana, esta lucha queda expresada en muchas ocasiones a través de sus canciones. Simone dejó Estados Unidos en 1969, tras el asesinato de Martin Luther King, hastiada de la segregación racial contra los afroamericanos.
De personalidad complicada, llegaba a ser altanera y vulnerable, y fuertemente apasionada. En la industria musical tenía fama de temperamental, una caracterización que Simone se tomó muy en serio. Aunque su personalidad era arrogante y distante, en sus últimas décadas parecía disfrutar con el acercamiento a sus audiencias, contando anécdotas y cumpliendo peticiones.
Recibió 15 nominaciones a los Premio Grammy y fue reconocida con el Grame Hall Of Fame en 2000. Dos días antes de morir, el 19 de abril de 2003, se le concedió un diploma honorario en el Instituto Curtis, la academia de Filadelfia que la rechazó cuando tenía 19 años por ser negra.

Recibió su primera guitarra a los 16 años. Hija del legendario cantante de jazz Nat King Cole, tuvo éxitos a mediados de los años 1970 como artista de R&B (Rhythm and Blues) con los éxitos «This Will Be» («Esto Será»), «Mr. Melody» («Señor Melodía»), «Inseparable» y «Our Love» («Nuestro amor»). Tras ventas muy bajas y pocas actuaciones debido a la adicción a las drogas, Cole resurgió como una artista pop con el álbum de 1987 Everlasting (Eterno), con una versión de «Pink Cadillac» («Cadillac rosa») de Bruce Springsteen. Se crio en el adinerado distrito de Hancock Park de Los Ángeles. Grababa desde la infancia, Cole refería que a su familia los llamaban «the black Kennedys» («los Kennedy negros») y llegó a conocer a muchos grandes cantantes de jazz, soul y blues. A los seis años, Natalie cantó con su padre un álbum de Navidad y a los 11 años inició su formación. Cole creció bajo la adopción de su hermana mayor Carole «Cookie» (1944-2009) (su madre María era más joven que la hija de su hermana), adoptaría a su hermano con el nombre de Nat «Kelly» Cole (1959-1995) y sus hermanos mellizos más pequeños Timolin y Casey (nacidos en 1961).
Su tío Freddy Cole era un cantante y pianista con numerosos álbumes y premios. Cole entró en la Northfield School, una escuela preparatoria elitista de Nueva Inglaterra hasta que su padre falleció de cáncer pulmonar en febrero de 1965. Después de esto, tuvo dificultades de comunicación con su mamá. Se inscribió en the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Nat King Cole

Su padre Edward Coles era carnicero y diácono en la Iglesia Bautista. Su familia se trasladó a Chicago cuando Nat era todavía un niño. Allí, su padre se convirtió en ministro de la iglesia y su madre, Perlina Adams, era la encargada de tocar el órgano de la iglesia. Fue la única maestra de piano que tuvo Nat en toda su vida. Aprendió tanto jazz como música góspel, sin olvidar la música clásica.
La familia vivía en el barrio de Bronzeville, famoso a finales de los años 20 por su vida nocturna y sus clubes de jazz. Nat visitó con frecuencia estos locales, escuchando a artistas como Louis Armstrong o Earl Hines.
Inspirado por Hines, Nat inició su carrera artística a mediados de la década de los 30 cuando aún era un adolescente. Adoptó el nombre de Nat Cole, abandonando la «s» de su apellido familiar. Su hermano mayor, Eddie, bajista, se unió a la banda de Nat cuando éste realizó su primera grabación en 1936. Tuvieron un cierto éxito como banda local en Chicago y se convirtieron en habituales en los escenarios de los clubes. De hecho, el sobrenombre de «King» (rey) se lo dieron a Nat en uno de estos locales. Cole participó también como pianista en una gira junto a Eubie Blake. Cuando la gira llegó a Long Beach (California), Nat decidió establecerse allí.
Nat Cole junto con otros tres músicos formaron el grupo «King Cole Swingers» con el que actuaron en numerosos locales. Nat se casó con Nadine Robinson y se trasladó a Los Ángeles donde formó el «Nat King Cole Trio». El trío estaba compuesto por Nat al piano, Oscar Moore a la guitarra y Wesley Prince al Bajo. El trío actuó en Los Ángeles desde finales de los 30 y participó también en numerosos programas de radio.
A Cole se le consideraba un pianista de jazz brillante. Apareció, por ejemplo, en los primeros conciertos de «Jazz at the Philharmonic» (JATP). Un grupo compuesto únicamente por piano, guitarra y bajo en la época de las grandes bandas significó una auténtica revolución e impuso un estilo que más tarde imitarían otros grandes del jazz y del blues como James Brown y Ray Charles. Cole actuó también como pianista acompañante de artistas de la categoría de Lionel Hampton.
Sin embargo, Cole no consiguió llegar al gran público hasta «Sweet Lorraine» en 1940. Aunque había cantado diversas baladas con el trío, se avergonzaba de su voz y jamás se consideró un buen cantante.
A principios de los años 40, el King Cole Trio firmó un contrato con la discográfica Capitol Records con la que continuó durante el resto de su carrera. En la década de los 50, la popularidad de Cole era tanta que el edificio de la Capitol Records era conocido como «la casa que construyó Nat».
