Con la edición de su álbum debut Ten en 1991, Pearl Jam irrumpiría con fuerza en el ámbito musical alternativo. Junto a Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots y Soundgarden están considerados como una de las bandas más grandes e influyentes de toda la escena del movimiento Grunge. Sus miembros fundadores y que aun siguen en el grupo son Eddie Vedder (voz), Mike McCready (guitarra principal), Stone Gossard (guitarra rítmica) y Jeff Ament (bajo).
Pese a ser reconocidos como uno de los grupos más importantes e influyentes del grunge, Pearl Jam siempre destacó por un rock con toques más melódicos e influencias de grupos de rock de los años 1960 y 70 como The Who, Led Zeppelin o Pink Floyd. Sus miembros siempre se han caracterizado por su rechazo a determinadas prácticas comunes en la industria musical, como por ejemplo la realización de vídeos promocionales; también es conocido su boicot a la empresa Ticketmaster. La revista Rolling Stone los describió en 2006 como un grupo que «se pasó la mayor parte de la década pasada destruyendo su propia fama».
Pearl Jam es considerado uno de los grupos más importantes de la década de 1990. Hasta la fecha, el grupo ha vendido 30 millones de álbumes en los Estados Unidos, así como una cantidad aproximada de 65 millones de discos en todo el mundo. El grupo estaba originalmente compuesto por Stone Gossard (guitarra rítmica), Jeff Ament (bajo), Mike McCready (guitarra principal), Eddie Vedder (voz) y Dave Krusen (batería). El baterista en la formación actual es Matt Cameron, miembro a su vez de Soundgarden, que pertenece al grupo desde 1998.

Sledge fue una de las figuras clave del soul y uno de los pioneros del llamado country soul a finales de la década de 1960. Se le conoce mundialmente por su interpretación del tema When a Man Loves a Woman (1966), que fue el único número 1 de toda su discografía. Su admirable voz le llevó a la inmortalización de dicho tema, aunque también obtuvo otros grandes éxitos en la década de 1970, como I’ll be your everything y Sunshine.
En 1987 obtuvo otro éxito internacional cuando su tema de 1966 «When A Man Loves A Woman» se utilizó en un anuncio de la famosa marca Levi’s.
Por su repercusión como figura de la música, fue incluido en el Rock and Roll Hall of Fame en 2005.
Falleció el 14 de abril de 2015, a los 74 años, en su residencia de Baton Rouge (Luisiana), debido a un cáncer hepático.

Simon fue el compositor del dúo Simon & Garfunkel, autores de diversos álbumes de gran éxito como Bridge over Troubled Water (1970). Antes de unirse a Garfunkel, Simon había compuesto y grabado más de 30 canciones entre 1957 y 1964, año en que el dúo grabó su primer disco con la compañía Columbia Records.
Simon y Garfunkel contribuyeron también a la banda sonora de la película de 1967 El Graduado, protagonizada por Dustin Hoffman y Anne Bancroft. Paul Simon compuso la canción «Mrs. Robinson» especialmente para la película; en la película también aparecen otras canciones del dúo. La canción «Mrs. Robinson» consiguió dos premios Grammy.
En 1970 con Simon & Garfunkel graban para el sello CBS el álbum Bridge over Troubled Water, donde se incluye «El Cóndor Pasa» tema popular andino, música del peruano Daniel Alomías Robles y con el acompañamiento en la quena de Uña Ramos. Para la canción «Duncan» en 1972 vuelve a utilizar los sonidos andinos de la quena.
Aunque ya llevaban una década separados (el dúo se disolvió en 1971), Simon se reunió de nuevo con Garfunkel en 1981 para realizar un concierto en el Central Park de Nueva York. Aunque iniciaron un nuevo álbum juntos, Garfunkel decidió retirarse del proyecto ya que no estaba de acuerdo con algunas de las letras propuestas por Simon. Este álbum acabó siendo una grabación de Paul Simon en solitario, Hearts and Bones.
En 2003 Simon y Garfunkel se reunieron de nuevo para iniciar una gira, primero por los Estados Unidos de América y después por el resto del mundo (2004)

A pesar de que la banda originalmente fue creada en 1965 por Marty Balin, Kantner finalmente se convirtió en el líder de Jefferson Airplane y dirigió el grupo a través de su exitoso periodo de finales de la década de 1960. En 1970, mientras todavía estaba activo con Jefferson Airplane, Kantner y varios músicos del Área de la Bahía grabaron un proyecto ocasional bajo el nombre Paul Kantner y el Jefferson Starship.

Patrick Bruce Metheny nació en la localidad de Lee’s Summit, en el estado de Misuri (Estados Unidos) el 12 de agosto de 1954 en una familia de músicos. Empezó a tocar la trompeta a los 8 años por influencia de su hermano Mike Metheny, pero se cambió a la guitarra a los 12. A los 15 estaba trabajando con los mejores músicos de jazz en Kansas City, y adquiriría así valiosa experiencia en los escenarios a una muy temprana edad. Recibió una beca para estudiar música en la University of Miami, y posteriormente en Boston, donde llegó a ser profesor de la Berklee College of Music (una de las escuelas de música con más prestigio de todo el mundo), dando clases a alumnos como Mike Stern o Al DiMeola. Allí conoce a Gary Burton que le incorporó a su banda durante 3 años, mostrando ya su forma de tocar moderna, pero conectando con el jazz más tradicional, swing, y blues. Su debut discográfico fue en 1974, en el disco «Jaco», de la mano de otro debutante: Jaco Pastorius, junto a Paul Bley al piano eléctrico y Bruce Ditmas a la batería. A lo largo de su carrera, Pat Metheny ha seguido redefiniendo el género usando nuevas tecnologías y trabajando constantemente para evolucionar el potencial de su instrumento.
En 1976, edita su primer álbum instrumental, Bright Size Life, con el genial Jaco Pastorius al fretless bass fender (bajo sin trastes), reinventando el tradicional sonido de guitarra de jazz. Un año más tarde conoce a Lyle Mays con el que tras grabar un disco, decide montar un grupo: el Pat Metheny Group.
Con los años, ha tocado con artistas tan diversos como Antonio Carlos Jobim, Steve Reich, Ornette Coleman, Herbie Hancock, John Scofield, Jim Hall, Michael Brecker, Milton Nascimento, Pedro Aznar, Toots Thielemans, Enrique Morente, David Bowie y Carlos Santana. Ha formado equipo con el tecladista Lyle Mays durante más de veinte años (una asociación que ha sido comparada a la de Lennon con McCartney y a la de Duke Ellington con Billy Strayhorn por los críticos y oyentes). La obra de Metheny incluye composiciones para guitarra solista, para pequeños conjuntos, para instrumentos eléctricos y acústicos, para grandes orquestas, con ajustes que van desde el jazz hasta el rock moderno y clásico.
Además de ser un dotado músico, Metheny ha participado también en el ámbito académico como profesor de música. A los 18 años, fue el profesor más joven de la historia en la Universidad de Miami. Pacific Gas & Electric fue una banda estadounidense de blues rock, creada en 1967 por el cantante y baterista Charlie Allen, y que permaneció en activo hasta mediados de la década de 1970. Su principal éxito fue la canción «Are You Ready?».

La banda se formó en Los Ángeles en 1967, con los guitarristas Tom Marshall y Glenn Schwartz, el bajista Brent Block, y el baterista Charlie Allen, que había estado previamente en la banda Bluesberry Jam. Pronto, Allen dejó el papel de baterista para asumir el de cantante y frontman de la banda, incorporándose Frank Cook, previamente batería de Canned Heat, para hacerse cargo de su instrumento. Originalmente adoptaron el nombre de Pacific Gas and Electric Blues Band, aunque lo acortaron cuando firmaron con el sello discográfico Kent Records, con el que publicaron el álbum Get It On… Blues, a comienzos de 1968. El disco apenas tuvo repercusión, pero casi inmediatamente después, la aparición de la banda en el Miami Pop Festival de mayo de 1968 les facilitó un contrato con Columbia Records.
Su primer disco para Columbia, Pacific Gas and Electric, se publicó en 1969, pero el gran éxito les llegó con su siguiente álbum, Are You Ready?, en 1970. La canción homónima alcanzó el # 14 en el Billboard Hot 100?. Tras la grabación del disco, Cook quedó afectado por un accidente de tráfico y le sustituyó Ron Woods, quedando Cook como mánager. Marshall y Schwartz se marcharon, y fueron reemplazados por Frank Petricca (bajo) y Ken Utterback (guitarra), pasando Brent Block a tocar la guitarra rítmica, antes de su abandono a finales de 1970. De forma inusual para la época, la banda mezclaba músicos blancos y negros, lo que generó algunos problemas en sus giras, especialmente durante su concierto en Raleigh (Carolina del Norte).
En 1971, cambió su nombre a PG&E, como consecuencia de las presiones legales de la empresa de electricidad de la que habían tomado el nombre. La banda además, aumentó su tamaño, pues a Allen, Woods, Petricca y Utterback se añadieron Jerry Aiello (teclados), Stanley Abernathy (trompeta), Alfred Galagos y Virgil Gonsalves (saxos), y Joe Lala (percusión). Con esta formación grabaron el álbum PG&E, y aparecieron en la película de Otto Preminger Tell Me That You Love Me, Junie Moon, protagonizada por Liza Minnelli. La banda se deshizo a continuación, aunque Allen, con músicos de estudio, publicó un último disco, Pacific Gas & Electric Starring Charlie Allen (Dunhill, 1973) con el nombre de la banda.

Otis Redding

Es considerado uno de los más grandes cantantes en la historia de la música estadounidense y un artista seminal en la música soul y de rhythm and blues. Su estilo de canto procedía de la música gospel, el precedente de su género musical. Su estilo de canto influyó en muchos otros cantantes de soul de los años 1960. Durante su vida, sus grabaciones fueron producidas por Stax Records, establecida en Memphis, Tennessee.
Según la página web del Salón de la Fama del Rock (donde fue incluido en 1989) el nombre de Redding es «sinónimo del Soul, música derivada de la experiencia afroamericana y la transformación del góspel y el rhythm and blues en una forma de funky secular». Inspirado en sus orígenes por Charlie Parker, comenzó a tocar el saxofón alto a los 14 años y el tenor dos años después. Sus primeras experiencias musicales fueron en bandas texanas de R&B, entre las que estaban las de Red Connors y Pee Wee Crayton, pero su tendencia a ser original estilísticamente le granjeó hostilidades entre las audiencias y los músicos. Coleman se trasladó a Los Ángeles a comienzos de los cincuenta, donde trabajó como técnico de ascensores mientras estudiaba libros de música. Conoció a músicos con aspiraciones similares en cuanto a grala originalidad: Don Cherry, Charlie Haden, Ed Blackwell, Bobby Bradford, Charles Moffett y Billy Higgins, pero no fue hasta 1958 (tras numerosos intentos de tocar con los mejores músicos de Los Ángeles) en que Coleman consiguió un núcleo de artistas con los que poder tocar su música.
