Sus primeras obras, incluyendo «A Fool in Love»,»It’s Gonna Work Out Fine»,»I Idolize You» y «River Deep – Mountain High» se convirtieron en referentes importantes en el desarrollo de la música Soul, mientras que sus últimos trabajos fueron conocidos por sus salvajes interpretaciones de arreglos de clásicos del Rock como «I Want to Take You Higher» y «Proud Mary», esta última les haría ganar un premio Grammy. También son conocidos por sus obscenas actuaciones en vivo, que fueron sólo comparables a la de James Brown y The Famous Flames en términos de espectáculo musical.
El dúo fue incluido en el Rock & Roll Hall of Fame en 1991.
