Supertramp
Supertramp es un grupo británico de rock progresivo fundado en 1969 por el músico Rick Davies. Supertramp ha sido una de las bandas más influyentes de la escena musical mundial de los setenta y ochenta del siglo XX y ha vendido más de 70 millones de discos. La primera formación de Supertramp, integrada por Davies, Roger Hodgson, Richard Palmer y Robert Millar, publicó un álbum homónimo con las características del rock progresivo de escaso éxito comercial, seguido de un segundo trabajo, Indelibly Stamped, en el que Palmer y Millar fueron sustituidos por Frank Farrell, Kevin Currie y Dave Winthrop.

Luego del escaso éxito inicial, Davies y Hodgson crearon una nueva formación, integrada por Dougie Thomson, John Helliwell y Bob Siebenberg, cuyo sonido se orientó más al pop manteniendo el estilo progresivo, con un uso predominante del piano Wurlitzer, del saxofón y de otros sonidos orquestales. El primer álbum de esta formación, Crime of the Century, favoreció el auge comercial de Supertramp, consolidado con sencillos como «Dreamer» y «Bloody Well Right».4? Crime of the Century fue seguido de trabajos como Crisis? What Crisis? y Even in the Quietest Moments, que labraron la reputación de Supertramp como una banda de directo.
El álbum Breakfast in America consolidó a Supertramp como una banda de éxito al alcanzar el primer puesto en la lista de los discos más vendidos de países como Alemania, Australia, Canadá, Estados Unidos, España y Francia, entre otros. Charles Roger Pomfret Hodgson (Portsmouth, Hampshire, Inglaterra, Reino Unido 21 de marzo de 1950), más conocido como Roger Hodgson, es un músico y compositor británico, fundador junto a Rick Davies de la banda de rock progresivo Supertramp y compositor de gran parte del catálogo musical del grupo hasta su marcha en 1983.? Tras abandonar Supertramp en 1983, Hodgson inició una carrera en solitario con la publicación del álbum In the Eye of the Storm, grabando hasta la fecha tres álbumes de estudio.? A pesar de varios intentos por retomar la colaboración con Rick Davies, su antiguo compañero en Supertramp, Hodgson centró desde 1997 su carrera artística en ofrecer conciertos periódicos durante extensas giras anuales, en las que combina actuaciones en solitario con conciertos respaldados por una banda de apoyo.
Hijo de Charles Hodgson y Jill Hodgson, Roger Hodgson nació el 21 de marzo de 1950 en Portsmouth, Inglaterra y se crio en Oxford, en una familia de clase media. Fue a la escuela Woodcote House, cerca de Wallingford, donde aprendió a tocar la guitarra eléctrica, y posteriormente acudió a la escuela Stowe School, cerca de Buckingham. Island le usó como vocalista del grupo Argosy, formado por Reginald Dwight (más tarde conocido como Elton John), Caleb Quaye y Nigel Olsson. La única grabación del grupo fueron dos canciones, «Mr. Boyd» e «Imagine», compuestas por Hodgson y publicadas como sencillo en 1969 por dos sellos independientes, DJM en el Reino Unido y Congress en Estados Unidos. «Mr. Boyd» fue versionada en 1997 por Jake Shillingford y su grupo My Life Story en su álbum The Golden Mile.

Roberta Flack (Black Mountain (NC), 10 de febrero de 1937) es una pianista y cantante estadounidense de soul y quiet storm.

Paul Carrack
Paul Melvyn Carrack (Sheffield, Inglaterra, 22 de abril de 1951) es un cantante, músico y compositor británico. Apodado por el canal de televisión BBC como «El hombre con la voz de oro», Carrack empezó su carrera profesional como compositor y líder del grupo Ace y ganó popularidad como artista en solitario y por su pertenencia a grupos como Roxy Music, Squeeze y The Bleeding Heart Band, grupo de respaldo de Roger Waters. Entre 1980 y finales de la década de 1990, ganó popularidad como fundador junto a Mike Rutherford y Paul Young (Sad Café) del grupo Mike + The Mechanics. Nick Drake
Nicholas Rodney «Nick» Drake (Rangún, Birmania; 19 de junio de 1948-Warwickshire, Inglaterra; 25 de noviembre de 1974) fue un cantautor y músico británico. A pesar de que tuvo poco éxito comercial durante su vida, su trabajo es muy apreciado en la actualidad por los críticos y por otros músicos, y es considerado uno de los más grandes artistas del siglo XX.

El instrumento principal de Drake fue la guitarra, pero también sabía tocar el piano, el clarinete y el saxofón. Drake firmó un contrato con Island Records cuando tenía veinte años, y en 1969 editó su primer álbum, Five Leaves Left. Editó otros dos discos, pero inicialmente ninguno vendió una cantidad significativa de copias, en parte debido a que Drake rehusaba realizar presentaciones en vivo y entrevistas.? Drake luchó contra la depresión y el insomnio durante su vida, hecho que se reflejó en sus letras. Tras completar su tercer álbum, Pink Moon (editado en 1972), dejó de tocar y grabar y se fue a vivir a la casa de sus padres en Warwickshire.
Drake cursó Literatura Inglesa en la Universidad de Cambridge, pero abandonó sus estudios nueve meses antes de terminarlos para dedicarse a su carrera musical. Murió el 25 de noviembre de 1974 a los veintiséis años de edad, como resultado de una sobredosis de antidepresivos que tomaba para poder dormir. No ha podido establecerse si su muerte fue accidental o suicidio. Pasó los últimos años de su vida sumido en una honda depresión, por la que llegó incluso a ser hospitalizado.
Si bien no recibió reconocimiento en vida, en la actualidad es considerado un artista de culto,? y ha influido a músicos como Badly Drawn Boy, Robert Smith (de The Cure), Peter Buck (de R.E.M.), Kate Bush, Paul Weller, The Black Crowes y Mikael Åkerfeldt (Opeth). En 1985 The Dream Academy llegó a las listas británicas y estadounidenses con «Life in a Northern Town», una canción sobre Drake y dedicada a él. La primera biografía sobre Drake fue escrita en 1997 y al año siguiente se editó un documental llamado A Stranger Among Us.

New Seekers – The
The New Seekers es una banda británica de pop, formada por el australiano Keith Potger en 1969, tras romper con su banda The Seekers. La idea era que The New Seekers iría dirigida al mismo tipo de público que The Seekers, pero su música tendría influencias del rock además de influencias de la música folk. La banda se formó tras la desaparición de la exitosa banda australiana de los años 60 The Seekers. Keith Potger, miembro de los Seekers, fundó The New Seekers en 1969, junto a Laurie Heath, Chris Barrington, Marty Kristian, Eve Graham y Sally Graham (Eve y Sally no eran parientes). Potger también actuaba y grababa con la banda.? Tras el lanzamiento de un único single, el grupo se refundó en 1970 con Eve Graham, Lyn Paul, Marty Kristian, Peter Doyle y Paul Layton. Esta nueva formación alcanzó el éxito con su debut, una versión del tema de Melanie Safka «What Have They Done To My Song, Ma», (titulado en los EE.UU. como «Look What They’ve Done To My Song, Ma»?) que alcanzó el puesto 20 en el top de los EE.UU. y uno menos en el Reino Unido.
Durante el año siguiente, la banda lanzó singles con escaso reconocimiento, pero en junio de 1971 lanzaron, «Never Ending Song of Love» (el primero de muchos éxitos producidos por David Mackay). La canción fue un gran éxito en el Reino Unido, siendo número 2 durante cinco semanas y fue uno de los sencillos más vendidos del año. Hacia final de 1971, el grupo grabó y adaptó el jingle de la Coca-Cola, «I’d Like to Buy the World a Coke», con el que consiguió más fama. Con el tema original «I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing», del que nacía la versión para Coca Cola, consiguieron su primer éxito mundial. Fue número 1 en Reino Unido durante cuatro semanas y vendió casi un millón de copias. En los EE.UU., la canción también fue un éxito, alcanzando el número 7. También fue número en muchos otros países y la canción más exitosa de la banda.

Mari Trini
María Trinidad Pérez de Miravete-Mille, más conocida como Mari Trini (Murcia, 12 de julio de 1947 – Murcia, 6 de abril de 2009), fue una cantautora española que gozó de enorme popularidad y éxito comercial tanto en España como en países de habla hispana durante las décadas de 70s y 80’s. Vendió más de diez millones de discos, por lo que fue galardonada con un Disco multidiamante en 2005, y en el mismo año fue homenajeada por la SGAE en reconocimiento a su larga carrera. De marcada personalidad y defensora del feminismo en sus letras, Mari Trini es una de las figuras esenciales de la música española en los años de la Transición. Cosmopolita por formación y gustos musicales, fue descubierta en la adolescencia por el cineasta Nicholas Ray, quien la empujó a curtirse musicalmente en Londres, y después residió durante cinco años en Francia. Fue autora e intérprete de baladas hoy ya fundamentales del cancionero en español, y se la recuerda también por sus interpretaciones en francés, particularmente del clásico Ne me quitte pas, de Jacques Brel.

Era hija de Gonzalo Pérez-Miravete Pasqual de Riquelme y de María Mille Campos (1926-2016). Según casi todas sus biografías, nació en la pedanía de Singla, del término de Caravaca de la Cruz, Región de Murcia, España, el 12 de julio de 1947. A muy temprana edad se trasladó a Madrid con su familia, en la que no existía tradición artística.
Alumna de un colegio religioso, su infancia se vio marcada por una enfermedad que la obligó a permanecer en cama desde los siete años hasta los catorce. Durante su convalecencia comenzó a interesarse por la música: aprovechó para aprender a tocar la guitarra y empezó a componer sus primeras canciones. Esta vocación, y desavenencias con su madre, le empujaron a marchar de casa con ganas de libertad y en busca de más amplios horizontes.

Máquina!
Máquina! (en catalán Màquina!) fue un grupo de rock progresivo y jazz-rock fundado en Barcelona en 1969 y disuelto en 1972. Fueron pioneros del rock progresivo en España y están considerados como uno de los mejores grupos de rock de los años 70. Su primer disco, «Why?», es probablemente el más recordado del progresivo español y uno de los mejores discos de rock grabados en España.
El origen de Máquina! se encuentra como banda de acompañamiento de los diversos grupos que formaban el Grup de Folk durante el año 1968; en especial del cantante Jaume Sisa, con el que tocaban bajo el nombre de La Companyia, SL.

Tras la disolución del Grup de Folk, Jordi Batiste y Enric Herrera deciden formar su propio grupo y pasarse al rock. Primero entra el baterista Santiago García “Jackie”. Según explica Herrera en el libro “Barcelona, del rock progresivo a la música layetana”, la intención inicial era ser un trío en el que él tocaría guitarra y teclado, como Steve Winwood en The Spencer Davis Group, pero la llegada de Lluís Cabanach “Luigi”, forzó un cambio de planes y la banda pasaría a ser un cuarteto.
El line-up final sería: Jordi Batiste, bajo, voz y flauta; Enric Herera, piano, órgano Hammond y arreglos musicales; Luigi, guitarra; Jackie, batería. Las mayoría de las canciones las componían juntos Batiste (letra) y Herrera (música). En toda la música de Máquina! se puede apreciar el talento de Herrera como conductor, siendo el teclado, en la gran mayoría de los casos, el instrumento que dirige las canciones.
El grupo Máquina! hizo su música siempre en inglés, según dicen, para diferenciarse de la corriente catalana de la Nova Cançó, y del pop español comercial de la época. Puesto que en España no se estudiaba este idioma en aquella época, los títulos de los singles solían ir acompañados de la traducción al castellano, que no siempre era literal. El inglés lo habían aprendido de forma autodidacta y, por supuesto, había errores gramaticales y de pronunciación.
Con el apoyo de Ángel Fábregas y su sello Als 4 Vents, donde trabajan a cambio de grabaciones y promoción, editaron su primer single en agosto de 1969: «Lands of Perfection/Let’s Get Smashed». La Cara A del single era una canción con un gran protagonismo de órgano Hammond y un marcado estilo de rock psicodélico. La Cara B era un alegre jazz instrumental dirigido por el piano.
Este primer single recibió una buena acogida en ventas, 10.000 copias, y en crítica. Aunque también se remarcaba el poco futuro de este tipo de música en España. En su presentación en Madrid en el mes de septiembre fueron echados de varios clubs por el tipo de música que hacían. La presentación en Barcelona, en el San Carlos Club, en octubre, fue mucho mejor recibida.
A finales de ese mismo año y ya con un nuevo baterista, Josep Maria Vilaseca “Tapioles” o “Tapi”, publicarían el single «Earth’s Daughter/Look Away Our Happiness». En este segundo trabajo se aprecia una evolución considerable. La Cara A es un cuidado tema pop con arreglos orquestales a cargo de Enric Herrera. La Cara B, un tema rock de gran originalidad dirigido magistralmente por el órgano Hammond. Este segundo single tendría todavía un éxito considerable con 7.000 copias vendidas.
