Eric Patrick Clapton (Ripley, Surrey, 30 de marzo de 1945) es un guitarrista, cantante y compositor de rock y blues británico, conocido por su magistral habilidad con la guitarra eléctrica, en concreto con su Stratocaster. Es conocido por el apodo de Slowhand («Mano lenta»),? desde su época en The Yardbirds y con el de God («Dios») en su época con Cream. Clapton es miembro del Salón de la Fama del Rock por partida triple: como miembro de The Yardbirds y de Cream y por su carrera como solista. En opinión de muchos críticos, Clapton ha sido uno de los artistas de la cultura de masas más respetados e influyentes de todos los tiempos.

Su estilo musical ha sufrido cambios diversos a lo largo de su carrera, pero sus raíces siempre han estado profundamente ligadas con el blues. Es reconocido como un innovador en varias etapas de su carrera. Practicó el blues rock con John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers y The Yardbirds y el rock psicodélico con Cream, además de haber tocado estilos muy diversos en su etapa en solitario: Delta blues en su álbum Me and Mr. Johnson, pop en su canción «Change the World» o reggae en su versión del tema de Bob Marley «I shot the Sheriff». Clapton nació en Ripley, Surrey, Inglaterra, como hijo de la pareja formada por Patricia Molly Clapton (7 de enero de 1929-marzo de 1999), de 16 años, y Edward Walter Fryer (21 de marzo de 1920-1985), un piloto militar de Montreal, Quebec, Canadá de 25 años. Su padre se encontraba destinado en el Reino Unido durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial y antes de que Eric naciera, regresó a Canadá junto a su esposa. El niño creció con su abuela, Rose, y su segundo marido Jack creyendo que eran sus padres, y que su madre era su hermana mayor. El apellido de sus abuelos era Clapp, mientras que Clapton es el apellido del primer esposo de su abuela Rose y abuelo materno de Eric (Reginald Cecil Clapton). Años después, su madre se casó con otro soldado canadiense (Frank MacDonald) y se mudó a Canadá, dejando a Eric a cargo de sus abuelos. Cuando Clapton contaba con nueve años de edad, averiguó la verdad cuando su madre y su hermano Brian regresaron a Inglaterra de visita. Clapton creció siendo un niño callado, solitario, y en sus propias palabras, «un niño malo». Aun así Clapton es conocido por su sentido del humor. Eric se crio en un entorno musical, donde su abuela tocaba el piano y, tanto su tío como su madre, disfrutaban escuchando las Big Bands de la época. Su madre le contó en una ocasión al biógrafo oficial de Eric, Ray Coleman, que su padre era un músico de mucho talento, y que tocó en varias bandas de la zona de Surrey. Eric obtuvo su primera guitarra como un regalo con motivo de cumplir 13 años de edad. Era una guitarra acústica de la marca alemana Hoyer, que le resultó de difícil ejecución. Fue miembro fundador y vocalista de The Animals, banda originalmente formada en Newcastle en los primeros años sesenta. Burdon cantó muchos clásicos de los Animals como «The House of the Rising Sun», «Good Times», «Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood», «Bring It On Home to Me» y «We Gotta Get Out of this Place». Esta nueva formación tuvo éxitos con canciones como «When I Was Young», «Sky Pilot» y «Monterey». Esta unión duró hasta 1969, tuvo grandes cambios en la formación y cambió su nombre Eric Burdon and the Animals por el de Eric Burdon and the New Animals. Cuando los New Animals se fueron, Burdon unió fuerzas con el grupo funky de Los Ángeles War. El álbum Eric Burdon Declares War creó clásicos como «Spill The Wine» y «Tobacco Road». En 1971 Burdon empezó su carrera en solitario.

Burdon se volvió a unir con los otros Animals originales en 1976 y 1983, pero esta unión acabó pronto. Aun así, en la reunión de 1983 se publicó el single The Night, que había sido ignorado en las listas de ventas. Burdon dirigió aunos cuantos grupos llamados Eric Burdon Band o alguna variación parecida, con constantes cambios en la formación. Su popularidad se hizo más fuerte en la Europa continental que en el Reino Unido o en los Estados Unidos. Hoy en día continúa grabando y dando conciertos, en solitario o al frente de otra versión de Eric Burdon and the Animals. En 1990, un nuevo Eric Burdon and the Animals grabó una versión del single Sixteen Tons, de Merle Travis, para la película Joe contra el volcán, en cuyos créditos iniciales apareció.
