Además de contar con la participación de los vocalistas Ronnie James Dio, Graham Bonnet, Joe Lynn Turner y Doogie White en distintas etapas, la banda estaba integrada por una serie de instrumentistas. Originalmente su música mezclaba letras épicas con el sonido del metal neoclásico, pero esta se volvió más comercial tras la marcha de Dio. Rainbow ocupa el puesto noventa de la lista 100 mejores artistas de hard rock diseñada por VH1.
