Platters – The
The Platters (formado en Los Ángeles en 1953 y disuelto a finales de los años 1960) fue un grupo musical estadounidense de rhythm and blues y doo wop compuesto por cinco cantantes (cuatro hombres y una mujer).

The Platters iniciaron su carrera artística en Los Ángeles como grupo de doo wop, aunque con una identidad muy débil como para hacerlos destacar sobre el resto. Sus primeras grabaciones las hicieron para Federal, un sello subsidiario de King Records (de Cincinnati). Estas primeras grabaciones no se parecen en nada a las que más tarde les harían famosos, en tanto que simplemente imitaban las corrientes y estilos del momento, sobre todo las vinculadas al R&B. Lo que cambió su suerte fue la aparición del que sería su mentor, mánager, productor, escritor y profesor vocal, Buck Ram. Ram convirtió lo que no era más que un convencional grupo vocal de R&B y doo wop, en un conjunto de estrellas y uno de los más duraderos y lucrativos grupos musicales de todos los tiempos. Hacia 1954, Ram tenía ya una agencia de talentos en Los Ángeles, escribiendo y arreglando para la editorial Mills Music, dirigiendo la carrera de The Three Suns —un grupo pop con bastante éxito— y trabajando con sus protegidos, The Penguins. En principio, The Platters parecían ser una buena adición a este listado.
Tras desvincularlos de Federal, Ram los situó dentro del emergente sello nacional independiente Mercury Records, colocándolos automáticamente en el mercado pop a través de los exclusivos contactos de distribución de la compañía. Entonces, Ram comenzó a trabajar sobre las potencialidades y debilidades del grupo. Los primero que hizo fue colocar el peso vocal del grupo sobre los hombros de Tony Williams, cuya voz era próxima a la de un tenor. El poder emocional de Williams fue completado con un grupo (aumentado en aquel momento con Zola Taylor) que trabajaba envolviendo cada una de sus notas con un bien estructurado soporte vocal. Con las letras pop clásicas de Ram y la paleta sonora de los cantantes, el grupo se convirtió rápidamente en un éxito dentro del pop y del R&B, consiguiendo ser el primer grupo negro de la época en situarse en los primeros puestos de las listas de éxitos. Considerado el más romántico de todos los conjuntos doo wop, éxito tras éxito fueron cayendo de manera aparentemente fácil: «Only you», «The great pretender», «My prayer», «Twilight time», «Smoke gets in your eyes», «Harbor lights».
En 1961 Williams abandonó el grupo. Hacia finales de los años 1960, el grupo se había disuelto debido al deseo de proseguir con distintas versiones del conjunto por parte de sus integrantes. Hasta la actualidad se pueden contabilizar 125 versiones de The Platters.

Johnny J.R Cash (Kingsland, Arkansas; 26 de febrero de 1932-Nashville, Tennessee; 12 de septiembre de 2003) fue un cantante, compositor, guitarrista, actor y autor estadounidense. Considerado como uno de los músicos más influyentes del siglo XX. Considerado el «rey de la música country» y un icono de ese género. Cash fue conocido por su profunda voz, por el característico sonido boom-chick-a-boom de su banda de acompañamiento -los Tennessee Three-, y por vestir ropa oscura lo que le valió el apodo de «El Hombre de Negro» («The Man in Black»). Era muy típico de él empezar todos sus conciertos con la sencilla frase: «Hola, soy Johnny Cash» («Hello, I’m Johnny Cash»).
Muchas de las canciones de Cash como «I Walk The Line», «Folsom Prison Blues», «Man in Black» tratan temas como la pena, la culpa, las tribulaciones morales y la redención, una tendencia que se acentuó en la última etapa de su carrera. Pero también compuso muchas canciones humorísticas (como «One Piece At A Time», «The One On The Right Is On The Left» y versionó «A Boy Named Sue», canción de Shel Silverstein), llenas de vitalidad («Get Rhythm») o con otras temáticas típicas del country como el ferrocarril («The Rock Island Line» o la famosa «Orange Blossom Special»). Curiosamente, algunos de sus temas más conocidos son versiones de otros artistas, pero versionadas con un estilo propio y que lleva su sello por todas partes como es el caso de «Hurt» (de Nine Inch Nails), Personal Jesus de Depeche Mode, One de U2, o el tema grabado junto con Joe Strummer, «Redemption Song», que Bob Marley había compuesto poco antes de su muerte.
Vendió cerca de noventa millones de álbumes en sus casi cincuenta años de carrera. Es presentado habitualmente como uno de los músicos más importantes en la historia de la música country. Es uno de los tres únicos músicos que han sido admitidos en más de un «Salón de la Fama»: en el Salón de la Fama del Rock and roll, del Country y del Góspel, de modo que, junto con Elvis Presley, es el único artista que está en Salones de la Fama de tres estilos diferentes (Rock, Country y Góspel). Su figura ha sido rehabilitada en las últimas décadas, entrando a formar parte en 1986 del Salón de la Fama del Rock dentro del primer grupo, junto con otros pioneros del rock, y posteriormente del Salón de la Fama del Rockabilly. En 2003, la revista Rolling Stone lo situó en el puesto 24.º de los mejores músicos del siglo.? Su vida fue llevada la gran pantalla en la película Gran bola de fuego, donde fue encarnado por el actor Dennis Quaid.
Jerry Lee Lewis nació en una familia muy pobre de Ferriday, en la parroquia de Concordia, al este de Luisiana. Comenzó a tocar el piano en su juventud junto a sus primos Mickey Gilley y Jimmy Swaggart, posteriormente uno de los primeros teleevangelistas. Debido al talento mostrado por Jerry Lee ya desde su infancia, sus padres hipotecaron su granja para comprarle un piano. Influenciado por la música popular entonces emitida por la radio en programas como The Louisiana Hayride o Grand Ol’ Opry, mezcló los estilos de la época (country, rhythm and blues, boogie-woogie y gospel) para crear el suyo propio.
En sus primeros años de adolescencia comenzó a acudir a los guetos negros para escuchar a los cantantes de blues y el 29 de septiembre de 1949 realizó su primera aparición pública en un espectáculo montado por la compañía de automóviles Ford en su ciudad natal, interpretando el tema «Drinkin wine, spoo-dee-o-dee».2?
En 1952, con 16 años, contrajo matrimonio con Dorothy Barton, dos años mayor que él (en esa época, en el sur de Estados Unidos, eran comunes los matrimonios a temprana edad). Ese mismo año grabó sus primeras canciones: una composición para piano llamada «New Orleans boogie» y un cover de la balada country de Lefty Frizze «Don’t stay away (‘til love grows old)». En septiembre de ese año su madre lo envía a una escuela religiosa de Waxahachie, Texas, para que interpretase música exclusivamente religiosa, pero pronto fue expulsado por tocar una versión de «My God is real» en estilo boogie-woogie.
En 1953, sin divorciarse de su primera esposa, se casa con Jane Mitcham cuando ésta queda embarazada del que sería el primer hijo de Lewis, Jerry Lee Lewis Jr. En 1954 volvió a grabar, haciendo versiones de canciones country como «If I ever needed you» y «I don’t hurt anymore».? En estos primeros años actuó en clubes en Ferriday, Natchez, Misisipi y Nashville (Tennessee). Al intentar aparecer en The Louisiana Hayride es rechazado ya que según los ejecutivos del programa debía tocar la guitarra y no el piano.
En 1956, después de leer un artículo sobre Elvis Presley en una revista, viaja a Memphis para probar suerte grabando en su misma compañía discográfica, Sun Records. En ese momento, el dueño de la discográfica, Sam Phillips, se encontraba en un viaje en Florida así que fue Jack Clement quien grabó sus primeras canciones para el sello: una versión de «Crazy arms» de Ray Price y una composición propia llamada «End of the road».

Four Tops
Four Tops es un cuarteto estadounidense activo desde 1954; pionero del sonido Motown, mantendría su alineación intacta por más de cuatro décadas, hasta la sucesiva muerte de varios de sus integrantes que posteriormente fueron reemplazados.? Levi Stubbs, Renaldo “Obie” Benson, Lawrence Payton y Abdul “Duke” Fakir fundaron el grupo y empezaron a cantar juntos en la escuela secundaria en Detroit, Michigan, originalmente llevó el nombre de The Four Aims, pero en 1956 cambiaron su nombre a Four Tops para evitar ser confundidos con los Ames Brothers. Ese mismo año grabaron su primer sencillo «Kiss Me Baby», con la disquera Chess Records. Además, en sus primeros años contaron con el apoyo de Billy Eckstine, quien fungió como su mentor. Posteriormente grabaron sencillos para las casas discográficas Red Top, Columbia Records y Riverside Records.
Finalmente, en 1964 firmaron con la casa Motown, en la división de jazz, pero poco después empezaron a trabajar con el legendario trío compositor Holland-Dozier-Holland, con los que grabaron su primer éxito “Baby I Need Your Loving” que se colocaría en Top 20 de las listas de éxitos. Fue durante el periodo entre 1964 y 1967 que tuvieron sus más grandes éxitos, entre ellos “I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)”, “It’s The Same Old Song”, “Shake Me, Wake Me (When It’s Over)”, “Reach Out I’ll Be There”, “Standing In The Shadows Of Love” y “Bernadette”?. En 1972, cuando el sello discográfico se mudó a Los Ángeles, Four Tops firmó con ABC/Dunhill Records? donde grabarían éxitos como “Ain’t No Woman (Like The One I’ve Got)” y “When She Was My Girl”.
En 1990 entraron al Salón de la Fama del Rock.
Aunque en la actualidad tres miembros del cuarteto original han muerto, Four Tops sigue presentándose con el tenor Abdul «Duke» Fakir y tres nuevas adiciones.
