The New Seekers es una banda británica de pop, formada por el australiano Keith Potger en 1969, tras romper con su banda The Seekers. La idea era que The New Seekers iría dirigida al mismo tipo de público que The Seekers, pero su música tendría influencias del rock además de influencias de la música folk. La banda se formó tras la desaparición de la exitosa banda australiana de los años 60 The Seekers. Keith Potger, miembro de los Seekers, fundó The New Seekers en 1969, junto a Laurie Heath, Chris Barrington, Marty Kristian, Eve Graham y Sally Graham (Eve y Sally no eran parientes). Potger también actuaba y grababa con la banda.? Tras el lanzamiento de un único single, el grupo se refundó en 1970 con Eve Graham, Lyn Paul, Marty Kristian, Peter Doyle y Paul Layton. Esta nueva formación alcanzó el éxito con su debut, una versión del tema de Melanie Safka “What Have They Done To My Song, Ma”, (titulado en los EE.UU. como “Look What They’ve Done To My Song, Ma”?) que alcanzó el puesto 20 en el top de los EE.UU. y uno menos en el Reino Unido.
Durante el año siguiente, la banda lanzó singles con escaso reconocimiento, pero en junio de 1971 lanzaron, “Never Ending Song of Love” (el primero de muchos éxitos producidos por David Mackay). La canción fue un gran éxito en el Reino Unido, siendo número 2 durante cinco semanas y fue uno de los sencillos más vendidos del año. Hacia final de 1971, el grupo grabó y adaptó el jingle de la Coca-Cola, “I’d Like to Buy the World a Coke”, con el que consiguió más fama. Con el tema original “I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing”, del que nacía la versión para Coca Cola, consiguieron su primer éxito mundial. Fue número 1 en Reino Unido durante cuatro semanas y vendió casi un millón de copias. En los EE.UU., la canción también fue un éxito, alcanzando el número 7. Son recordados como la mejor agrupación australiana en la década de los 60s y la primera de dicho género de ese país en lograr un hit a nivel internacional, con su clásico de 1966 “Friday on My Mind” (previamente el grupo de folk-pop, The Seekers, tuvieron éxito internacional en 1965 con otro estilo musical).
Aunque no pudieron repetir el gran éxito que lograron en su país adoptivo (Australia), si tuvieron una importante repercusión en Europa con su enérgico pop rock de garaje con influencias rhythm and blues, pop barroco y música psicodélica.
A pesar de que la alineación de The Easybeats no era íntegramente australiana (aunque ante la historia se califique como de ese país), si fue muy influenciada por la migración europea hacia la sociedad de Australia de la post-guerra.
Los cinco miembros fundadores fueron originarios de familias que migraron a dicha nación desde Europa: el cantante Stevie Wright (1948-Leeds) y el baterista Gordon “Snowy” Fleet (1946-Liverpool) son provenientes de Inglaterra; el guitarrista rítmico y pianista George Young (1947-Glasgow) es nacido en Escocia; el guitarrista principal Harry Vanda (1947-La Haya) y el bajista Dick Diamonde (1947-Hilversum) originarios de los Países Bajos.
La composición de los temas en su casi totalidad correspondió a la creatividad del dúo Young-Vanda. Wright también contribuyó en una buena parte de las canciones.
Ellos coincidieron en la escena musical de Sídney cuando eran estudiantes, lugar donde hicieron una breve carrera inspirados en bandas británicas de moda de la época, y utilizaron por algún tiempo el nombre de “Starfighters”, hasta adoptar el definitivo “The Easybeats”, nombre sugerido por Snowy.
Después de definir su sonido y construir un nombre reconocido alrededor de Sídney, a finales de 1964 el grupo fue contratado por Albert Productions, y, bajo la licencia de la división australiana de la etiqueta EMI Parlophone y con Ted Albert como productor, escribió y grabó 20 canciones originales, con un sonido fresco y vigente con las tendencias musicales.

Los miembros fundamentales son Neil Finn como autor de la mayoría de sus canciones, guitarrista y cantante, Paul Hester en la batería y Nick Seymour en el bajo. Adicionalmente, Mark Hart (guitarra y piano, también miembro de Supertramp) colaboró en Together Alone y Recurring Dream (1992–1996) y Tim Finn (compositor y piano, hermano de Neil Finn) participó en Woodface (1990–1992).
En 2006 Neil Finn y Nick Seymour se juntaron para trabajar en un nuevo disco en solitario de Neil Finn. Dada la gran química que se mantenía entre ellos decidieron volver a unirse para sacar un nuevo disco como Crowded House aprovechando las canciones en las que ya habían trabajado. Mark Hart volvió con ellos a la guitarra y piano, y para ocupar el lugar del difunto Paul Hester, contrataron a Matt Sherrod. Como resultado de este trabajo surge en 2007 el álbum Time on Earth y una subsiguiente gira mundial.
Sus canciones más conocidas incluyen “Don’t Dream It’s Over”, “Something So Strong”, “Better Be Home Soon”, “Weather with You” y “Fall at Your Feet”. “Weather with You” alcanzó el número uno de 40 Principales, curiosamente en dos semanas muy separadas en el tiempo, en septiembre de 1992 y marzo de 1997.
Antes de formar Crowded House, Neil Finn y Paul Hester habían participado ocasionalmente en la banda de rock Split Enz fundada por, entre otros, Tim Finn.
La banda que luego será Crowded House nació con el nombre de The Mullanes en 1985 incluyendo al guitarrista Craig Hooper, antiguo miembro de The Reels. Firmaron un contrato con Capitol Records y fueron a Los Ángeles, donde Hooper deja el grupo. Por petición de la editorial, cambiaron el nombre a Crowded House (en español, Casa repleta) refiriéndose al pequeño lugar donde vivían durante la grabación del álbum, en la calle N. Sycamore St Nº 1902.
