Paul Simon
Paul Frederic Simon (Newark, Nueva Jersey, 13 de octubre de 1941) es un cantante, músico y renombrado compositor musical estadounidense. Se graduó en el Queens College y estudió durante un breve periodo en la escuela de derecho de Brooklyn (Nueva York). Es considerado como uno de los mejores cantautores de toda la historia, ocupando el octavo lugar, según la revista Rolling Stone.

Simon fue el compositor del dúo Simon & Garfunkel, autores de diversos álbumes de gran éxito como Bridge over Troubled Water (1970). Antes de unirse a Garfunkel, Simon había compuesto y grabado más de 30 canciones entre 1957 y 1964, año en que el dúo grabó su primer disco con la compañía Columbia Records.
Simon y Garfunkel contribuyeron también a la banda sonora de la película de 1967 El Graduado, protagonizada por Dustin Hoffman y Anne Bancroft. Paul Simon compuso la canción “Mrs. Robinson” especialmente para la película; en la película también aparecen otras canciones del dúo. La canción “Mrs. Robinson” consiguió dos premios Grammy.
En 1970 con Simon & Garfunkel graban para el sello CBS el álbum Bridge over Troubled Water, donde se incluye “El Cóndor Pasa” tema popular andino, música del peruano Daniel Alomías Robles y con el acompañamiento en la quena de Uña Ramos. Para la canción “Duncan” en 1972 vuelve a utilizar los sonidos andinos de la quena.
Aunque ya llevaban una década separados (el dúo se disolvió en 1971), Simon se reunió de nuevo con Garfunkel en 1981 para realizar un concierto en el Central Park de Nueva York. Aunque iniciaron un nuevo álbum juntos, Garfunkel decidió retirarse del proyecto ya que no estaba de acuerdo con algunas de las letras propuestas por Simon. Este álbum acabó siendo una grabación de Paul Simon en solitario, Hearts and Bones.
En 2003 Simon y Garfunkel se reunieron de nuevo para iniciar una gira, primero por los Estados Unidos de América y después por el resto del mundo (2004)

Paul Albert Anka (Ottawa, Canadá; 30 de julio de 1941) es un cantautor y actor canadiense. Anka ascendió a la fama a finales de década de 1950, manteniéndola a lo largo de las décadas de 1960 y 1970 con sus canciones «Diana», «Lonely Boy», «Put Your Head on My Shoulder» y «(You’re) Having My Baby». Creó composiciones muy conocidas, tal como el tema musical del programa The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson y uno de los mejores éxitos de Tom Jones, «She’s a Lady». También escribió la letra inglesa sobre la música de Claude François y Jacques Revaux, o la letra de la canción estrella de Frank Sinatra «My Way», la cual ha sido cantada por muchísimos artistas, incluyendo Elvis Presley, Raphael. En 1983 escribió una canción con Michael Jackson, «I Never Heard», a la cual se le cambió el título en 2009 por «This Is It». Otra canción que escribió junto a Jackson en esa misma sesión fue «Love Never Felt So Good»; fue descubierta y sacada en el disco Xscape en 2014. Johnny Mathis también sacó esta canción en 1984.
Anka se convirtió en un ciudadano naturalizado en Estados Unidos en 1990.
Paul Anka grabó su primer sencillo «I Confess» a los 14 años. En 1957 se fue a Nueva York con 100$ que le había dado su tío. Allí Anka hizo una entrevista para Don Costa, el director artístico y de repertorio de ABC, en la cual le cantó lo que se creía que era un verso lleno de amor para una antigua niñera. En una entrevista con Terry Gross de NPR en 2005, Anka confesó que los versos estaban dedicados hacia una chica de su iglesia que apenas conocía.

Eunice Kathleen Waymon (Tryon, Estados Unidos, 21 de febrero de 1933 – Carry-le-Rouet, Francia, 21 de abril de 2003), más conocida por su nombre artístico Nina Simone, fue una cantante, compositora y pianista estadounidense de jazz, blues, rhythm and blues y soul. Estilísticamente, la palabra que mejor caracteriza a Nina Simone es eclecticismo. Su voz, con rango propio de una contralto, se caracterizaba por su pasión, su breathiness (voz jadeante, sofocada, sin aliento) y su trémolo.
La influencia de Duke Ellington es patente en toda la obra de Nina, pero muy especialmente en cierto tipo de composiciones rebosantes de improvisación y de cercanía espiritual. Nina logra la complicidad del oyente con un empleo intencional de los silencios y minimizando el acompañamiento. Cuando cantaba, efectuaba en ocasiones llamativas transiciones entre el susurro, el grito y el lamento, para intentar subrayar los estados de ánimo enunciados en las canciones.
Gran luchadora por los derechos civiles de las personas de ascendencia africana, esta lucha queda expresada en muchas ocasiones a través de sus canciones. Simone dejó Estados Unidos en 1969, tras el asesinato de Martin Luther King, hastiada de la segregación racial contra los afroamericanos.
De personalidad complicada, llegaba a ser altanera y vulnerable, y fuertemente apasionada. En la industria musical tenía fama de temperamental, una caracterización que Simone se tomó muy en serio. Aunque su personalidad era arrogante y distante, en sus últimas décadas parecía disfrutar con el acercamiento a sus audiencias, contando anécdotas y cumpliendo peticiones.
Recibió 15 nominaciones a los Premio Grammy y fue reconocida con el Grame Hall Of Fame en 2000. Dos días antes de morir, el 19 de abril de 2003, se le concedió un diploma honorario en el Instituto Curtis, la academia de Filadelfia que la rechazó cuando tenía 19 años por ser negra.

Marvin Gaye
Marvin Gaye, nacido como Marvin Pentz Gay, Jr. (Washington D. C., 2 de abril de 1939-Los Ángeles, 1 de abril de 1984), fue un músico, cantante y productor de soul, smooth soul, quiet storm, blaxploitation y uno de los componentes fundamentales del estilo Motown Sound. Durante sus primeros años, llegó a ser conocido como “El Príncipe de Motown” y “El Príncipe del Soul”, grabando numerosos hits de su época como “Pride and Joy”, “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”, “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)” y el número 1 en Estados Unidos y Reino Unido “I Heard It Through the Grapevine”.
Pese a su éxito inicial, la carrera de Marvin Gaye se ve interrumpida tras resultar fuertemente afectado por la abrupta muerte de Tammi Terrell, su eterna compañera en los escenarios. Luego de un periodo de depresión (del que nunca salió por completo), intentó buscar una posición como receptor abierto en un equipo profesional de Fútbol Americano, los Detroit Lions, algo que finalmente no se le permitió por miedo a una posible lesión que afectara su carrera. Mussapere y Herundy, ambos hermanos, eran el tercer y cuarto de los treinta hijos de uno de los caciques Tabajara, de nombre Mitanga. Nacidos en la selva profunda del estado de Ceará, en el noreste del Brasil. Los Tabajaras era una tribu indígena bastante pacífica, que vivía bastante apartada de la civilización de aquel entonces, catalogada por ellos como los hombres blancos y a la vez considerados inferiores a ellos. Un buen día a finales de la década del treinta, los hermanos Mussapere y Herundy, encontraron en la tupida selva una guitarra, en el camino donde justamente había pasado una expedición de hombres blancos. No sabiendo la utilidad que tenía, la llevaron a su vivienda y la tuvieron escondida aproximadamente dos semanas. Al analizar el instrumento cautelosamente y al darse cuenta que no se trataba de un arma de fuego, luego de ser vista por los demás miembros de la tribu, los dos jóvenes indígenas la siguieron estudiando más detenidamente. Los sonidos que emitían las cuerdas mientras sus manos la exploraban, acrecentaron aún más su curiosidad, y de una manera inexplicable, los hermanos aprendieron a ejecutar el instrumento, tomándole mucho cariño, llegando a tomar la decisión de dejar la tribu y adentrarse en la civilización de los hombres blancos, para saber el lugar de procedencia del instrumento musical.
Su punto inicial fue Río de Janeiro, y en esta ciudad se ganaron rápidamente la simpatía del público, interpretando con sus manos inexpertas, las canciones típicas de su tribu. Un buen día un pujante empresario teatral los observó detenidamente y los contrató para una gira por toda América del Sur, la que duró seis años. Luego llegaron a México, donde permanecieron una larga temporada. Tiempo después cambiaron su identidad y se pasaron a llamar Antenor y Natalicio Moreyra Lima, bajo el epíteto de Los Indios Tabajaras. A partir de ese instante, decidieron dejar de lado sus presentaciones para tomar clases intensivas de guitarra. Cada uno tomó distintos profesores. Como resultado: Antenor se especializó en el acompañamiento y Natalicio, en la melodía.
